Intro to Acting:
the Fundamentals

This class focuses on the fundamentals of acting not principles or techniques of acting. The fundamentals of acting include: stage directions, terminology, how to score a script, how to create a monologue or rehearsal book, and acting games. Monologue work begins in Acting Technique 1: Building the BasicsYou do not need to take this class in order to take Acting 1.

Acting 1 Bundle

The Acting 1 bundle includes three classes at a reduced price when registering for all three at once. The bundle includes Acting 1, Audition Technique, and Voice for the Actor at a reduced cost when registering for all three class at the same time.

Voice for the Actor 1.2

Using the building blocks of voice from VftA I, students will now use text and continue to strengthen their vocal skills using the exercises they learned in the previous class. 

 

This can be part of the Acting 2 bundle.

Sense Memory

Hone your acting skills further with this advanced acting class focusing on using the senses to create physical and emotional responses. Students will increase their focus, imagination, and harness the ability to add texture and depth to their acting to create believable and honest emotional responses. Also helps in creating invisible objects realistically when miming.

 

You must have completed Acting 1 and 2 to register for this class.

 

Acting Technique I: Building the Basics

This is the next step after Intro to Acting. Students will learn to apply the basic principles of Intention, Obstacle, and Tactic while working on a monologue. Other topics in class include beats, pauses, emotional tones and levels, given circumstances, and stakes. At the end of the 8 weeks, students will perform their pieces.

Acting Technique II:
Adding to the Basics

Students will work on the monologues from Acting 1 for the first two weeks while preparing a new monologue for the class. Principles and techniques covered in this class include: Subtext, Status, Using the Magic If, Inner Monologues, and Relationship.

​

This is included in the Acting 2 bundle.

Voice and Speech

Students will learn the foundation of the International Phonetic Alphabet (I.P.A.) and apply it to understand the basics of producing the sounds needed for the various dialects including British, Cockney, and Irish.

 

This can be part of the Acting 2 bundle.

Acting Technique IV:
Scene Study

For the actor who wants to develop their acting skills working with other actors, this class focuses on two-person scene work. You must have completed Acting Technique I, II, and III or have comparable experience to register for this class.

Audition Technique

From first contact to the final call back, learn the proper and professional way to audition and make a great first and lasting impression. A must for any actor. This class focuses on stage auditions and commercial auditions. This is a lecture based class. Students must have a prepared monologue or in the process of learning one for this class.​

​

​

Character Development

Using techniques such as animal work, observation, movement, voice, and a few advanced acting exercises, students will explore creating a character from a non-fictional, non-living person and bringing them to life. Students will present their character in a 15-minute private moment on the final night. This is a great class to stretch yourself as an actor.

 

This is included in the Acting 2 bundle.

Acting 2 Bundle

The Acting 2 includes three classes at a reduced price when registering for all three at once. This bundle includes includes Acting 2, Speech and Dialects,  and Character Development at a reduced cost when registering for all three class at the same time.

​

Acting classes in the bundle must be taken on the day the bundle is offered. Classes cannot be switched out for the individual class offered on a different day.

Advanced Acting Technique 1: Connecting to Character and Text

This class gives the actor the opportunity to hone their craft and explore text and choices through script analysis and exercises.  

​

Voice for
the Actor 1.1

Acquire the skills to produce sound properly for stage and screen. Learn how to use the full range of your voice with exercises and text. Breath, sound, placement, and pitch will be explored in this class. This is included in the Acting 1 bundle.​​​

Script Analysis

Become a better script detective with our Script Analysis class. Students will gain a deeper understanding of story structure by identifying character traits including archetypes and stereotypes, arcs, subtext, and theme. The class will conclude with students performing an audition using sides provided and the skills learned throughout the class.

Acting Technique III:
Intro to Scene Study

This advanced class focuses on justifying the emotion,  voice, and actions of your character as well as introduces the elements of scene work and how to find movement and blocking using text and character. Students will use a pre-existing monologue in their repertoire to work on while exploring action. Scenes will be chosen by the instructor.​

Actors' Lab:
Monologue and Scene Work

This class is strictly for the actor or actors who want to work on a monologue or scene outside of rehearsal. This is also open to all students who want to reinforce the principles and techniques taught in our beginning and intermediate classes. ​​​​

Acting: Sense Memory

This Master Class focuses on utilizing your senses to connect to objects, people, and text better. Untap the technique needed to bring truth to your character's emotional life and environment. A must class for any serious actor.

Character Development

Using techniques such as animal work, observation, movement and voice, students will explore creating a character using fictional or non-fictional people and bringing them to life.

​

Devised Theatre

Students will collaborate to develop a short play based on a given prompt. We will explore genre, character, style, and play structure. The session will end with an informal performance of the devised piece. 

Improvisation

Learn how to live in the moment and act on the spot in this fun and exciting class. Students learn games, long and short forms of Improv, and improve their skills for listening and communication, all in a risk-free environment.

Acting with
Movement

Explore acting with the inclusion of movement. Students will learn to use their bodies to help tell the character's story using Feldenkreis, Alexander, and Laban techniques.

Shakespeare

Take the fear out of Shakespeare and discover the beauty and fun of this often misunderstood branch of acting. Students explore the language of Shakespeare and the literary styles he uses including iambic pentameter, anthesis, prose vs. verse, and more, while working on a monologue chosen just for you.

Script Analysis

Students will gain a deeper understanding of story structure, character traits and arcs, archetypes and how to identify them, scene arcs, act arcs, act breaks, subtext, and theme.

 

There will be professional audition sides in the final two classes, allowing students to put their new critical analysis skills to the test.

 

Those interested will also have the chance to perform the sides for critique and redirections. 

Styles of Performance

Step up your acting game with this Master Class. Students will work on short monologues while exploring four different styles of performance: Clowning, Realism, Farce, and Elizabethan.

Voice-Over with Wendy Zier

This class will give you the tips and tools needed to get started in the exciting world of voice-over.

​

Topics covered in class include: how to breakdown a script, finding your voice, getting into the business, working in front of a mic, and 1-on-1 in-class coaching. Students work at her home studio for mic work.

 

Wendy Zier has over 25 years experience in the business (Disney, Hasbro, Blue Cross)

On-Camera Tech 3: Acting for the Camera: Film

Students take a short 5-minute excerpt from the scene or one-act they are rehearsing and translate it for the film, giving them the experience of being in front of the camera and working on a real set.

We combine two of our 6-week On-Camera Technique Master Classes into one 6-week Master Class. Actors spend the first few weeks learning how to audition for the camera and then spend the  remaining weeks gaining experience acting in front of it. Students get practical hands on experience. A must for anyone wanting to increase their skill in on-camera acting.

On-Camera Tech 1: Auditioning for
the Camera

Students learn the skills to properly audition for the camera including: framing, slating, interpreting the copy, editing, and uploading video submissions.

On-Camera Tech 2: Acting for the Camera

In this Intermediate class, actors work on acting for the camera using short scenes.

During the 7 weeks, students will be exposed to Signature classes and panels with a conservatory-like class schedule: classes during the week and classes and rehearsals on the weekends culminating in a black box presentation for the public.​​​​​

Acting as a Business

The business side of acting is just as important as knowing how-to act.  This must-have class covers topics such as: headshots, resumes, agents,  social media, and much more. Increase your business savvy and take your career to the next level.

Jane gives each participant a 20-minute headshot session and provides one free digital print. A great way to test out her amazing talent before booking a full session.

How an Actor Prepares Panel

We talk to a local actor and learn about their journey and how they prepare for a roles, giving tips and advice along the way.

Delve into the mind of an actor and see how different every actor's approach to acting is.

Working with a Director Panel

We sit down with local directors and talk about what they look for in an actor's audition, how they approach their work, and share anecdotes and tips along the way. Past directors have included: David Henderson, Ira David Wood III, Amelia Lumpkin, Tony Pender, Sue Scarborough, and Maggie Cook.
